Why You Should Go Camping Next Fall
Growing up in California, the novelty of Fall in Utah brings out a child-like admiration for me. I know it barely compares to, say, Vermont in the Fall — or most of the East Coast for that matter — but it still excites me. I actually get to experience scenic Fall drives, walks through the leaves, and cold temperatures hitting your face. Something I even more incredible, that I had never thought of until this year, is camping in the Fall. The past few years, I have seen Fall as the year-end of climbing, hiking, camping, etc. simply because temps drops so quick. This year, however, some friends and I took advantage of a break from school to fully immerse ourselves in the Fall colors.
We set our sites on the Uinta Mountain Range. It was roughly an hour and a half to reach our spot: open fields full of dispersed campers and RVers. We settled on top of a hill, away from all the RV’s that couldn’t make it up. Night had already fallen by the time we arrived, hiding the colors we were hoping to see. We set up camp, made some food, and talked around the fire. The fire felt nice. Just because winter hadn’t set in yet, didn’t mean that it was warm: we definitely felt the cold. I will say, it wasn’t as cold as I had expected.
We awoke the next morning to the sun already on our tent. It was one of those rare times that you sleep past 8am while camping. Stepping out into the crisp morning air, the yellow, orange, and red foliage greeted us louder than the Italian aunt you haven’t seen in years. I was in complete awe. It was never-ending.
We spent out day hiking and exploring the area completely surrounded by the beauty of Fall. Again and again, my breath was taken away by the views at every turn in the road and even just sitting in camp staring off into the distance. It was by far one of the best camping experiences I’ve had. I’ll always recommend a camping trip, but especially in October. It is a completely new and exciting adventure for new and experienced campers.
