Sunset at Canyonlands National Park

It only takes 3 hours and 43 minutes to drive from Salt Lake City to Moab, but that is only the start of the race. And just as any good race, you never know all the twist and bumps or where you’ll end up, but its sure to be an entertaining weekend. For the past three years, a group of friends and I, have regularly visited Moab and never quite had the same experience. So, there are a few tips for a great race.

1. The right car

Just as you need the right car, you also need to make sure you have the right gear; set yourself up for success. Moab can be unpredictable and it is better to be over-prepared and look ahead. Take the time to research your trip and make sure to have water, insulated layers, a sleeping bag and good shoes.

2. Line up

Before the race, drivers get a starting position. Moab is the same: you have to find your spot. There are lots of camping options, especially on BLM land, but they can be hard to find and fill up fast.

Best practice is to arrive early. Moonflower Canyon and Big Bend are both worth checking. They are near the river and removed from all the busyness. They are first-come, first-serve and $15/night. Another option is dispersed camping. Willow Springs Trail Camping is one of many areas surrounding Moab. As you drive southbound on highway 191, it will be on your left before the yurts. There are plenty of spots to set up camp and it is free to stay.

Climbing at Ice Cream Parlor

3. The race

Now, the race is underway, where do you go? Well, that depends. You can hike, climb, site seeing, off-road, and more. For site seeing or hiking, visit Arches National Park. There is a multitude of hikes and drives to see famous features. For first timers, I recommend the Delicate Arch hike.

If you want to climb, Ice Cream Parlor is a great place to start. It is right along the creek with no approach, fun sandstone, and welcoming people. Off-roading is easy to find. We often pick a dirt trail right off the road and see where it goes. This way, there are less people and a little more mystery.

Lastly, you want to finish the race with one last push. So, why not drive out to Canyonlands for sunset? Canyonlands has countless lookout points perfect sunsets. And, it’s one of the emptiest national parks. Hopefully, this gives you some ideas of how to maximize your race. Still, find ways to make it your own and get familiar with the track.
